The Bihar health department, which Wednesday added 3,951 uncounted coronavirus-related deaths to the state’s overall tally, said it had to revise the data as the number of deaths caused due to the infection in private hospitals and clinics until June 7 were still not accounted for. The addition saw 1xbet betwinner reporting the highest number of Covid-19 deaths – 6,148 – on any day since the beginning of the pandemic last year.
The state department had set up two health committees to audit the Covid death toll after facing flak over reports of discrepancy between government and municipal corporations’ data.
According to the revised death toll, Bihar has so far reported 9,429 Covid deaths, including about 1,500 in the first wave. Patna alone accounted for 2,303 Covid deaths – an addition of 1,070 to the earlier figure of 1,229.
Leading government hospitals AIIMS, Patna and Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) reported 376 and 396 deaths, respectively, Nalanda Medical College and Hospital and Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences reported 483 and 265 deaths, respectively, only in the months of April and May this year.
Additional Chief Secretary, Health, Pratyaya Amrit told reporters on Wednesday: “We had set up two committees, who reassessed Covid death toll, taking into account unaccounted deaths in private hospitals and other places… We are issuing showcause notices to some officials for laxity on this count.”
The government committees reportedly crosschecked Covid death figures with municipal corporation records. Three cremation sites – Baans Ghat, Gulbi Ghat and Khajekalan Ghats — reported over 3,100 deaths, most of which were because of Covid.
Of the total 38 districts in Bihar, only eight have reported less than 100 deaths. Sheohar district reported a minimum of 35 Covid deaths.
Meanwhile, post-revision, Muzaffarpur has 314 additional deaths, followed by 291 in East Champaran and 222 in Nalanda.
The health department also announced that families of those who died with their RTPCR and Rapid Antigen Test negative but were diagnosed of Covid through HrCT reports would be eligible for Rs 4 lakh government compensation. The government took the decision following many compensation claims citing HrCT reports in the absence of positive RT-PCR and RAT reports
At present, Bihar has 7,353 active cases with a positivity rate of less than one per cent.
